5 Smart Ways to Future-Proof Your Home

Creative ways to future-proof your home.

“Alex, we were wondering if you could tell us about future-proofing our home?” One of my friends asked this question earlier today when we met for coffee. She and her husband are always investing in improving and bettering their home. Their most recent project is future-proofing their home.

“Future-proofing a home entails modernizing it to avoid obsolescence.” You may not have realized this, but when you install a solar roof or search for an eco-friendly alternative, you are future-proofing your home. Jon emphasizes that “undertaking modifications in advance can improve the resale value of your home.”

Future-proofed homes also appeal to homebuyers, for when you want to get cash for your home.

What Are Some Smart Ways to Future-Proof Your Home?

One cannot expect everyone to be aware of future-proofing their homes. Knowledge comes with time and experience, and that’s how I was able to figure out some ways to future-proof homes.

#1 Install Solar Panels

Future proofed homes have solar panels.

Installing solar panels has been the “acai bowl” of future-proofing homes for years now. Every other Alex is now switching to solar panels to make his home more energy-efficient. Solar panels, either professionally or DIY installed, are usually placed on the property’s rooftop and allow the conversion of sunlight into electricity, which is then used to power your home.

The solar panel system is connected to the local grid station, and the grid ensures that homeowners with solar panels receive credit for the power their system generates.

A drawback that I have noticed is that houses that are shaded with trees and other buildings are not suited for solar panels. The idea is that optimal sunlight hits the solar panels.

#2 Implement Smart IoT Devices

Smart IoT (Internet of Things) devices increase the efficiency of your home. I wasn’t fully aware of this concept, but it is a game-changer. These devices include sensors that can be controlled remotely.

For instance, you could control the curtains, thermostats, and even the garage door. Implementing a smart IoT system could also add value to the property and increase the price that future buyers would be willing to pay.

#3 Installing Modern Security Technologies

Homeowners should consider taking proactive steps and installing a modern security system to protect their homes. A home security system consists of multiple devices. Examples include security cameras, video doorbells, access control measures, panic buttons, entrance sensors, and motion sensors. The list is endless.

One thing Jon did to future-proof his home was to install an analog camera system. He says that he chose the type of camera based on:

  • His property’s characteristics
  • Personal preferences

Another modern safety technology is video doorbells. Additionally, entrance sensors alert the homeowner as to who is entering the premises, and motion sensors detect movement.

#4 Install an Electric Car Charge Station

Electric vehicles have taken over the country like a storm. Electric vehicles are the first preference for those focusing on sustainable driving. And thanks to their popularity, many used car dealerships like EchoPark stock low-cost choices.

My father installed an EV charging port for his new electric car. He got the house appraised a year later, and the value had increased by 21%. His thinking was that “a future-proof home catering to a newer generation of buyers is the smart choice to make”.

#5 Upgrade Your Wiring System

Old wiring systems are a big no when it comes to future-proofed homes. A smart way to future-proof your home is to replace worn-out cables with sustainable alternatives. When we flip homes, our target is to attain safety and sustainability in the wiring system.

To Sum Up

Future-proofing your home needs money well spent. If you are interested in raising property values, some smart future-proofing would be advisable.
