How to Maximize Space in a Kitchen

How to maximize space in a kitchen.

When we moved into our new home, I was adamant about having a spacious kitchen. That was a no-brainer for me. I wanted space, circulation, and counters. Modern homes generally don’t possess the capacity to offer that.

Years ago, a senior real estate businessperson told me that “if you want to sell a house quickly, make sure the kitchen is the selling point.” It took me years of hits and misses to understand what this person meant.

Allow me to build a story for you. “Think of a home in Philadelphia. As the hub of this home, the kitchen can bring together a couple after a hard day’s work or create unforgettable events with friends over meals.”

So, the kitchen space is vital for a home to sell. So, how do we do that, Alex?

1. Choose Built-In Appliances

Here’s what Jon told me about his journey of maximizing the space in his kitchen.

“Everyone knows that kitchen appliances can use up unnecessary space. Unfortunately, some of these items, like a coffee maker or an air fryer, are unavoidable. But a microwave can be built into the cupboards to save space.”

According to Jon’s wife, “I don’t know who thought of built-in appliances, but whoever did was a genius. The only reason we have a coffee maker on the kitchen counter is that it’s free from the microwave.”

I realized that this was a useful strategy to share with you guys, as I have seen its benefits firsthand.

2. Opt For Smaller Appliances

What do you mean by smaller appliances, Alex? How do I reduce the size of the oven? Smaller appliances offer the opportunity to play around with space. If your kitchen allows, opt for more compact appliances that perform just as well as their larger counterparts.

3 . Remove Walls

A word of advice is that kitchens should not feel congested. An easy way to maximize space in the kitchen is to remove a wall that doesn’t serve any purpose.

Angi suggests that “the cost of removing a non-load-bearing wall could be between $300 $1,000.”

Homeserve indicates that “renovating a standard-sized kitchen can cost between $7,000 and $17,000, depending on the quality of the finishes.” These renovations can add value to the property.

4 . Add Reflective Surfaces

“Just boost the natural light”. This is what Jon said when I told him that my kitchen had started to appear smaller.

A simple way to achieve this is to add reflective surfaces around the space. I installed an elongated mirror in my kitchen to highlight the different angles and make the space appear larger.

To further accentuate the natural light, I painted the walls with an eggshell white.

Considering Selling Your Property in Philadelphia?

The kitchen is an essential aspect of selling a home. Certain value-adding renovations, such as maximizing the space in a kitchen, could be a game-changer for you in the present and future.
