How to Keep Insects Out of a Yard

Insects in the yard.

I never thought that I’d be talking about bugs on a real estate blog. If you want affordable ways to sell your house, I’m your guy. But, now I’m also having to essay the role of an insect expert. And hey, I’m all for it.

Jon and I attended a real estate seminar, where one of the invitees asked a question that I initially found to be strange. “How do you keep insects out of a yard?” And to my surprise, the speaker had some insight.

“In recent years, homeowners have started converting their backyards into patios. Many of them now use the backyard for outdoor dining.” And that’s great. “But the yard is the natural habitat for insects.”

With summers ahead, favorable temperatures can bring forth potential insect infestations.

The speaker’s insight piqued my interest in keeping insects out of a yard, and I did some research.

1. Remove Standing Water

Stagnant water is a breeding ground for mosquitoes. You don’t want them around on a night out in your backyard dining area.

  • Keep your yard clear of stagnant water.
  • Clean the gutters and drains.
  • Eliminate stagnant water sources from your property. These could include pools or birdbaths.

2. Declutter & Remove Trash

Trash also holds moisture and stagnant water. This creates a warm zone for insects in your yard. Raking the leaves could improve the property’s curb appeal for the summer.

  • Declutter fallen leaves.
  • Keep firewood dry and store it above ground.

3. Maintain Your Lawn

Trim your lawn regularly to keep bugs out of the yard. If you need to revive your yard after winter, prepare it before the insects attack.

  • Remove built-up piles of grass.
  • Manicure the yard.
  • Invest in regular pruning.

4. Invest in Bug Repellent Plants

This is a natural way to repel insects from your backyard. This is one of the ways the speaker focused on when asked how to keep insects out of a yard.

5. Cover Food During Meals

Our barbecue parties at Jon’s home in Philadelphia always require being on the lookout for insects. They are part of the party too.

  • Keep the food items covered.
  • Clean up quickly after meals.

Summary

Backyards are essential to any property. “They hold significant emotional and monetary value and should not be ignored.”

Backyards also host a variety of insects that can cause potential issues for you, concerning aesthetics, daily life, or even health. So, it makes sense to learn the ways to keep insects out of the backyard.
